McClelland Tobacco Review

  • Super User

My impressions of the McClelland tobacco review I've done so far. I also made a video of the McClelland tobacco review on my YouTube channel with a link next to the name or on the image of the tin.

McClelland tobaccos are not available in South Africa. They are generally considered as good tobacco blends using good leaves. Enjoy and please leave comments of your impressions.

- Frog & Morton Cellar (Video and the Updated Review)

Package description: A mellow, fragrant Latakia blend aged with stave cubes cut from barrels used to mature and flavour Frog Morton's own special whiskeys.

My Tobacco Review: Fresh, the smokiness of the Latakia was evident - immediately won a point from me as I love Latakia. However, the Latakia is definitely not overpowering - just the right mix! Typical English... but then, after awhile you get those notes of Whisky. On the tongue, that same notes are continuing.... soft English blend with just the right amount of Latakia for the general smoker; and then that hint of Whisky. A very light hint of fruity sweetness as an afterthought. A definite winner. Update: Above review was from a sample. I just got my first tine and its quite different. On opening the tin, a typical sherry-cellar nose was bursting in my face - very excited to light this one! Keep on smelling, and the stronger whisky flavours will come through with a hint of sweetness; maybe like a whisky liqueur like Drambuie or Glayva. frog morton cellar

 - Frog & Morton on the Bayou (Video)

Description: When vacationing on placid waters of the Bayou, Frog Morton prefers this rich Balkan blend, to which he adds just enough precious Louisiana Perique. Smooth and dark and calming, a relaxing Balkan Blend. A blend of Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Perique and Virginia.(1)

My Tobacco Review: Just opened a tin which I bought from an old "cellar" (08/2013). The first aroma while opening the tin was a earthy maple aroma, backed by notes of citrus and old leather. A dark tobacco. Starting to smoke the bowl, was very enjoyable from the first puff - sweety (dark chocolate-like), spicy, NO bite and notes of a woodiness, cinnamon (spicy) and faintly some pepper from the Perique. Definitely a winner!

 - Old Dog (Video)

This is a full English Mixture dark with cool, smoky Cyprian Latakia, spiced with fragrant Xanthis from Macedonia. These tobaccos marry under pressure with aged, sweet flue-cured Virginias and smooth jet-black Cavendish to create a very rich, satisfying blend with a tin aroma this is incredibly appealing. Sit back comfortably to ponder the meaning of life with Old Dog as your companion. Blend of Black Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish and Virginia.

My Tobacco Review: Opening the tin, the aromas were spicey, leathery with a hint of dark chocolate. Taste: Lighting this blend was easy and going through the bowl was absolute bliss! I paired it with a Glenmorangie Lasanta at the end of the day. All the typical flavours were present - Latakia, sweetness / dark chocolate from the Cavendish, Virginia and a spiciness from the Orientals.

- Blue Mountain / Balkan Blue (Video)

This blend was one of three in the Balkan Sobranie Throwdown at the 2011 Chicago pipe show and won the People's Choice Award! McClelland has since changed the name to Balkan Blue. It is a rich dark tobacco with the finest Mountain Latakia, a classic full Balkan pipe tobacco mixture, smooth and deeply fragrant. The inspiration for this elegant mixture was a 21-year-old tin of the legendary #759. Package description: An English blend McClelland-style of Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia. (1)

My Tobacco Review: I have not had the original which inspired this (and many other) blends. Despite the efforts to recreate the original 759, I prefer reviewing it as a blend on its own. I loved the BM. In the bag, I got a healthy earthy smell with a sweet undertone, maybe a roasted or caramelised flavour. The latakia was there but in the background. Lighting this very dark tobacco was easy. The flavours were really nice; the smokiness from the Latakia was evident and combined well with the other components; giving you a leathery/old smoky taste with the sweetness playing around in your mouth. O, and yes, the oriental spiciness letting you know its there, not overpowering. Also a nice creamy taste as you progress through the bowl.

- Wilderness (Video)

Package description: This remarkable blend formulated by Fred Hanna provides a multi-layered, rich, taste experience. The highest quality Syrian Latakia combines with a small amount of Cyprian to form the base for an exquisite array of rare and precious orientals - sweet Drama, exotic Yenidje, and more. Red Virginias complement the blend, adding sweetness, richness, strength, and creaminess. Smoke this mixture and listen for the echoes of savored memories (1).

My Tobacco Review: Sweet chocolaty flavours in the tin as well as at first light. Down the bowl, Latakia comes to the fore. Nice taste however, I got a bit of tongue burn. Also notes of mouldy / leathery and reminisent of sitting around a camp-fire. Really nice flavours, just wish the tongue burn was not there -but that's a personal issue.wilderness
