Story of my Pipes

  • Thabo Pienaar

I've started puffing a pipe way back in the late 1970's. Me and my brother bought ourselves our first pipe; a Peterson P-lip system. Our pipe smoking ritual probably looked so enjoyable that my father, at that time smoking Rembrandt cigarettes, immediately went out and bought himself a pipe. Unfortunately it didn't replaced the cigarettes for him. After awhile, me and my brother stopped and we gave our pipes and accessories away, thinking we would not need it anymore.  Not long after, the whole pipe thing caught up with the three (myself, my brother and my dad) of us again.

We went out to a popular tobacconist in Pretoria and bought ourselves branded good pipes. We enjoyed this second stint for quite awhile; sitting, lighting, puffing, cleaning, the whole ritual of smoking our pipes while we have a good laugh about the day. There, and many nights after this in the bushveld, I started to realise how relaxing this whole exercise really can be; accompanied of course with good wine / whisky and loved ones.

This too passed and I've stopped again - this time of course, I kept my pipes. I kept on buying pipes until maybe the 1990's after which I completely stopped - thinking its not proper to spend money on something I'm not really "into". Since then, I smoked probably twice or three times a year; just for the fun of it.  In 2013, I light a pipe and enjoyed it so much, I've started searching the Internet about pipe smoking; something which was obviously not available in South Africa in the 1980's and part of 1990's.  Again I thought it would blow over (pun intended), and it might still, but here I am - still going strong by the time of this update(2017).

I've been happy to score some really great buys from the "Bay". I've come to find that all the Savinellis I've acquired, ended up to be great smokers. Naturally they have become my favourite pipes. To be fair to my other pipes, I can honestly say that all of the pipes I've kept (I've sold some which I didn't like that much, although they were also great smokers), I really enjoy. If I have to take 3 pipes with me, it would be a very difficult decision, but it would probably be my Savinelli Punto Oro, Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson and my Piet-en-Pauw Zulu. This is my collection to date.
