Pipe smoking, the action of smoking device is an old tradition. One historical account refers to archaeological artefacts of tobacco and pipes found in Egyptian mummies. Some other accounts refers to similar smoking activities by the Greeks and Romans and a herb smoked in Norway around 1000 AD. Interesting to note that the current anti-smoking campaign around the world is not the first; the first was actually launched around 1600′s. Since then smoking swayed between fashionable and non-fashionable. There was even a death penalty for smoking during the 1630′s in Russia, Turkey and China. Until governments realised how much money they can make out of taxes from smoking. Safe to say that the smoking of tobacco (or inhaling of burn leaves or vapor), existed in different older cultures like the native Americans, South Americans, India, Northern Europe and Africa.
In my opinion then, smoking a pipe is not a bad habit or an addiction (although it can be). There is a distinct difference between smoking a pipe and smoking a cigarette.
In short, while smoking a pipe, you rarely inhale like one do with cigarettes. Then why? Why bother if you don’t inhale? Exactly, because pipe smoking is more than a nicotine dependency. Pipe smoking is relaxing. The whole “thing” of packing, lighting, puffing, cleaning; of how the pipe sits in your hand; the psychological experience is relaxing. Many have written about the psychological effects of smoking a pipe.
To me, all this adds to the experience…. while others would’ve smoke one or even two cigarettes.
Unfortunately, its a tradition that is fading. You rarely see people smoking a pipe while in older times, that was the thing to do.
Am I a smoker? I don’t believe I am. A nicotine test showed I’m “clean”. My long functions are excellent. And besides, GMOs, and all kinds of other abuses and work stress are as dangerous if not more, than pipe smoking.
